26 July 2015

Congratulations to all swimmers on the conclusion of two long weekends of Wellington Short Course Champs.  You have all done yourselves, your parents, your coaches and the club proud - lots of PBs, lots of medals.  Some stats from the meet:

  • 3rd in the 12 and under division (the first and second placed clubs had almost double the swimmers that Tawa had)
  • 3rd in the open division (again the first and second placed clubs had almost double the swimmers that Tawa had)
  • 118 medals in total (last year our medal haul was 95)
  • The medals were spread over 23 swimmers - almost half of our team won a medal!
  • 3 of our swimmers won their age groups (Matthew Cooper, Joel Crampton and Danika Viskovic) and another 11 finished in the top 5 overall in their respective age groups
  • 1 Wellington record (Jenna Rolston-Larking)
  • Several swimmers made qualifying times for National Meets
  • Many club records broken
  • Lots of PBs
  • 3 parents from the club qualified as regional IOTs (Billie Mudie, Greg Cooper and Vicky Gibbs) and Sue Smart qualified as Regional Judge of Stroke.

Many thanks to those parents that assisted in some way over the two weekends - without parents prepared to help these meets could not take place.

25 July 2015
Session 4 completed - a great lot of PBs and another 22 medals to Tawa Swimmers. We are sitting 4th over all - just 2 points behind Karori!

19  July 2015

Congratulations to Billie Mudie, Greg Cooper and Vicky Gibbs who have qualified as Regional IOTs

At the end of the first weekend Tawa is sitting 3rd in the 12 and under competition and 4th in the overall points table - just 5 points behind Karori!  We had some more awesome swimming (and cheering) during this session and of course, lots more medals.

More awesome swimming from Team Tawa this morning.  Medal table has been updated.  It is pleasing to see that the medals haven't just come from a few swimmers - but from 19 swimmers!  And there have been awesome PBs across the team.

18 July 2015

First session of Wellington Short Course Champs completed.  Well done to everyone who competed - there were lots of PBs for Tawa Swimmers.  The medal table is shown below.  Tawa club is sitting 3rd overall after the first session!

2015 National Qualifying Changes

We would like to acknowledge and ensure all swimmers are aware of the following changes to Swimming New Zealand’s nationals qualifying criteria for the 2015 season:
SNZ Junior Nationals and SNZ Age Groups- Long course and converted short course times can be used for qualification. If a swimmer uses a converted short course time they will be seeded in the slowest heat.
SNZ Div II- The event will be swum as a long course event in 2015. Long course and converted short course times can be used for qualification. If a swimmer uses a converted short course time they will be seeded in the slowest heat.
SNZ Opens- Only long course times are able to be used for qualification. Swimmers may NOT use a converted short course time.
Meet fliers for each of the events are now available on the Swimming New Zealand website.

We encourage swimmers to gain their best long course time in order for them to have competitive advantage at a national level. Swimming Wellington is providing swimmers with three opportunities to obtain long course times for nationals qualifying times, these are: Swimming Wellington Signature Meets, Swimming Wellington Open Long Course Meet, and the Swimming Wellington Long Course Summer Champs. Additional meets in 2015 are being considered at this time, pending availability of pool space.

Good luck to all our swimmers taking part in the Wellington Championships this weekend and next.  Remember to get there on time for warmup (warmup time is when you need to be in the water, not arriving, so get there early), bring snacks, drinks and warm clothing.  Report to your team manager on arrival.  Parents, a reminder that seating is for the swimmers and Team Managers.  The children need to sit together as a team and will be looked after and sent to their races by the team managers.   Swimmers need to have everything they need with them e.g. goggles, cap, food etc.  Spare seats may be used by parents solely at the discretion of the team managers.  Please do not sit in between swimmers and do not be offended if you are asked to move.

Happy Fathers' Day to all the Dads in the club and congratulations to Tawa swimmers on another awesome session this morning.
PB rate was again high - 74%.  Another 7 medals this morning.  We now have a total of 53 medals and an additional 131 other top 10 placings. Also a special mention of Danika - Danika was awarded a bronze medal on Saturday night after another swimmer was disqualified.  Later the disqualification was over-turned, demoting Danika to 4th place.  Despite being permitted to keep the medal Danika very graciously  and voluntarily returned it this morning - a great example of sportsmanship.

And special congratulations to Jason who on Thursday night was, for the 2nd year in a row, awarded Wellington Junior Coach of the year.  A great recognition of the work both Jason and Cliff have been doing with our junior squads.

We now have a total of 25 medals (12 gold, 5 silver and 8 Bronze).  This morning the swimmers obtained 27 top 10 placings (out of 45 swims) with an awesome 78% PB rate.  Congratulations to Jack Plummer on another Wellington Record and to all our medal winners.  And congratulations to Andrew Evans (Danika's dad) who qualified as an IOT.

Results from NZ Juniors

Session 3 - Final Session - Tawa finished an awesome 12th overall nationally (91 clubs) and 2nd behind Swimzone out of the Wellington clubs.  But as a comparison Swimzone had 25 swimmers and Tawa had 5.  Taking top 3 finishes and dividing by the number of swimmers gives us a national placing of 4th. (This is what Take Your Marks uses to show relative performance).  So an extra awesome result! Well done to all our swimmers who qualified and took part.  Final medal tally is below.  In addition we had several other top 10 finishes.

Session 2 results have been included below - Tawa is now placed 12th overall

Session 1 (Saturday morning) - I will update this as I have time during the sessions.
After session 1 Tawa is sitting in 9th place overall out of 91 clubs (and leading other Wellington clubs)

Good luck to our team competing at NZ Juniors this weekend - Danika Viskovic, Katie Helm, Joel Crampton, Joshua Keegan and Sean Gatt.  We wish you all the best.

Early this year Tawa Swimming Club won the sports section of the Tawa Community Awards.  In recognition of this honour we were presented with a lovely native tree.  Having no grounds of our own, we asked the Tawa Community Board and the WCC to plant it on our behalf.  This they did in the grounds of Tawa Pool.  Below is a photo of our tree looking healthy and growing strong.

Medal Subsidies Suspended for 2010-2011 Season

The Swimming Wellington Board has put in place a number of measures to address a financial shortfall which is due mainly to a much tighter funding environment.  These include savings in operational expenses, such as, printing costs through producing the annual Hand Book electronically for the first time.

The Boards review of its finances has also needed to look at areas of discretionary expenditure.  This has lead to a some very hard decisions having to be made.   It is therefore with much regret that the Board advises members that it has suspend Medal Subsidies to swimmers for the 2010-2011 Season as part of this exercise.

This is not to say that Medal Subsidies have been done away with forever.  A decision will be made in June 2011 to determine if Medal Subsidies for the 2011-2012 financial year are once again affordable.

Swimmers are still eligible to apply for funding assistance under the Swimmer Financial Policy for team selection.

I can assure you that the Board will continue to manage its finances prudently and with care with, the view to supporting regional swimmers where and whenever possible.
